BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — The Stark County Sheriff’s Office recently received reports of phone call scams.
The scammers claim to be a Deputy or Sergeant Wendell from the Sheriff’s Office, informing recipients of a warrant for their arrest due to missing jury duty. They demand a $10,000 bond payment over the phone.
These scammers have become more sophisticated over time, with the ability to clone the Sheriff’s Office phone number to appear legitimate on caller ID. They even went as far as creating a fake warrant and texting it to a victim.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that they will never request money over the phone, through mail, or electronically. They also state that warrants are never issued over the phone, and official documentation is not sent via text message. A legitimate warrant and payment instructions would be delivered in person.
If you suspect you have been targeted by a scam or have questions about scams in your area, contact your local law enforcement immediately or visit the Sheriff’s Office in person to speak with a deputy.
